Tech Entrepreneurs: are you Productizing Yourself?
If you’re an entrepreneur, it’s not uncommon to find yourself speaking to people who want to start a company but have yet to find an idea.
If you look at successful entrepreneurs you’ll see that they’re typically productizing themselves. They figure out something that they do or understand very well and they build a business around it. Fashionistas help you pick the right style. Tech wizards build your software. Retailers launch ecommerce startups. Companies are simply extensions of the founders.
Do note that your secret sauce doesn’t have to be a sector focus. If you’re great at organizing, managing social media or making people happy, there might be a business in that. They key is to abstractly think about what makes you special…what you can give to the world.
Investors understand this. When they meet an entrepreneur who has spent his life studying maps and modes of transportation launching a travel-related site investors will say “he’s the right guy for this company”. That’s investor speak for stating that the founder is the light which can illuminate the path to building this business. All the company needs to do is productize the person.
If you’re thinking you aren’t good at anything, don’t despair. We all have something to offer the world; the biggest challenge is knowing ourselves well enough to understand what that is. That’s by far the most difficult thing.
Once you find it, you just need to know how to put your unique perspective in a box and sell it.
