The Mayor of London was back in Tech City to take a tour of the new London HQ of massively popular online merchants Amazon.

Boris Johnson was treated to an exploration of the impressive 47,000 square foot, 8-storey building that houses the heart of Amazon’s UK tech operations for future projects. Dubbed the ‘Global Digital Media Innovation Hub’, Amazon’s Tech City centre will focus on expanding the company’s newer interests in TV and film streaming services including LoveFilm.

As Amazon moves beyond its core services of online retail of consumer products, the company has demonstrated eagerness to engage with established players in new markets and beat them at their own game. Amazon has said that their new centre will drive that innovation and provide over 100 new vacancies for administration, IT jobs and technical support, as well as a number of existing staff who will be heading to the new headquarters.

The Mayor said: “It’s fantastic to welcome Amazon’s new tech hub to London, giving the capital yet another vote of confidence from the world’s leading innovators. Boosting London’s tech and media workforce is key to driving the capital’s economy and helping to create jobs and growth.”
