Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, has a population of just under half a million. It is Scotland’s second biggest city and the seventh biggest in Great Britain as a whole. The city’s economy is one of the strongest in the UK, second only to London. Although Edinburgh’s economy is mainly focused on industries such as financial services and tourism, the city also has a budding tech scene at its core.
One symbol of Edinburgh’s growth as a tech hub is the TechCube (@EdTechCube), which provides office space to the city’s hottest tech start-ups. With a prime Summerhall Place location that overlooks Edinburgh’s ancient skyline and is near to the historic University of Edinburgh and The Meadows, TechCube looks all set to become the place to be for the European tech start-ups of tomorrow.
Many of today’s leading start-ups have already established themselves within the Cube. These include cloudsoft (@cloudsoft), texaport (@texaportUK) and PlanForCloud (@PlanForCloud). Cloudsoft provides businesses with multi-cloud application management solutions, allowing companies to run their apps on an unlimited number of clouds and to govern running apps in real time. Texaport is a consultancy offering IT support, maintenance, cabling, CCTV and a number of other services. Approaching the cloud sector from an angle that’s different to the usual provision of cloud technology is PlanForCloud, which offers clients the use of a free cloud cost calculator. The calculator allows new business users of the cloud to project an in-depth cloud cost forecast.
Elsewhere in Edinburgh are two other major tech hubs – Silicon Walk (@Siliconwalk) and The Melting Pot (@TheMeltingPotEd). Silicon Walk is a creative co-working space that allows tech entrepreneurs to build their networks and get plenty of high quality work done, all in a conveniently central location. One tech start-up making the most of Silicon Walk is HomestayFriend (@HomestayFriend), a business that allows students to get matched up with providers of homestay accommodation online. Over at The Melting Pot, tech start-ups are not only provided with work space and networking opportunities but also with inspiration and opportunity for social innovation. The community’s members include Codeplay (@codeplaysoft), which is a software company offering cutting-edge technology solutions to graphics processors.
With so many exciting tech start-ups currently lighting up the city’s emerging tech scene, it’s unsurprising that Edinburgh is also home to a number innovative and very active tech Meetup groups. Green Tech Meetup allows entrepreneurs to come together and explore ideas for fostering a more eco-friendly tech culture within Edinburgh. Meanwhile, ProductTank Edinburgh (@producttank) is a group devoted to expanding its members’ interest in and knowledge of web and mobile product management.
