Vienna Tech Scene

Cost of living compared to other world cities: 99th most expensive out the 342 cities featured in Numbeo’s 2013 cost of living index.

As Austria’s capital and largest city, Vienna is perfectly positioned to become a major European tech hub. With a population of 2.4 million, the metropolitan area is home to more than 20% of Austria’s inhabitants.

ClusterHaus Wien (@clusterhausWien), TechMeetups’ (@TechMeetups) partner in the upcoming Vienna TechMeetups Drinks & Demo Night (@ViennaTechMeet), is a startup space at the centre of Vienna’s bubbling tech scene. Since it was founded in the summer of 2012, it has become the biggest tech centre for startups in the whole of Austria.

0002Tech startups that have made ClusterHaus Wien their home include allaboutapps (@itsallaboutapps), Runtastic (@Runtastic), FL3XX (@fl3xx) and beigebracht (@beigebracht). allaboutapps provides a range of services to do with mobile apps, including app publishing, app marketing, app consulting and app monitoring and support. Runtastic started off as a company targeting runners but it now provides apps for all types of amateur and professional sportspeople, including walkers, road cyclists, mountain bikers and winter sports enthusiasts. There’s even a nutrition quiz app for when you want to sort nutrition myths from facts.

0000FL3XX uses the latest technologies to create aviation dispatch software for business airline operations. Its online, portable, real-time solutions help business jet companies to operate on a leaner, more effective basis by more easily automating tasks, optimizing their resources in the process.  beigebracht offers elearning solutions covering subjects as diverse as music, sport and literature.

Apart from ClusterHaus Wien, there are other signs that Vienna’s tech scene is alive and kicking. One such sign is the fact that the 2013 Pioneers Festival (@PioneersHQ) will be taking place in the city. At the end of October, just as the TechMeetups Drinks & Demo Night will be getting into full swing, tech startups, investors and expert speakers will be gathering in Vienna for the two-day festival, which is Europe’s premier event focused on entrepreneurship and innovative tech. During the Pioneers Festival, which is to be held in Vienna’s iconic Hofburg Palace, there will be a variety of events focused on topics as diverse as the future of payments, robotics startups and hacking.

0001The Vienna TechMeetups Community will be joining a host of other tech Meetup groups in the city. Growth Hackers Europe gives its members tips and support on marketing their apps and creating optimal growth strategies. For budding entrepreneurs wanting to set up their own lean tech startup in the city, Lean Startup Circle (@LeanCircle) is a must-join group. This Meetup is a platform for entrepreneurs to exchange knowledge and ideas on the currently popular Lean Startup method. If you’re interested in design as well as tech and startups, check out On Design, Technology and Startups. The group brings creative and innovative individuals together for regular meetings that feature presentations and talks from industry experts.

Vienna, the heart of Europe, is fast becoming the heart of the continent’s tech scene. As TechMeetups prepares to help accelerate the process with the launch of the Vienna TechMeetups community, we look forward to seeing you on the Viennese streets of opportunity very soon!
