Hackney Community College and Hackney UTC ties up with Techmeetups.com

by Techmeetups

Hackney Community College and Hackney UTC ties up with Techmeetups.com to help the Tech Startup community in Tech City – also known as London’s Silicon Roundabout

Hackney Community College is an exciting, vibrant and multicultural FE College, based in the heart of Hoxton, and is the lead sponsor of a proposed new University Technical College – Hackney UTC.

Students succeed at Hackney Community College! School leavers and adults choose from hundreds of popular courses, and study full or part-time. The college also has flexible opportunities for employers to train their staff. Qualifications range from digital media and IT to administration, to security. Always taught by talented staff, and always using most up-to-date software and facilities.

Hackney Community College is now proud to be working with partners to develop a brand new technical school for East London and the City – opening in September 2012 – the Hackney UTC, an innovative University Technical College.  Students will specialise in a technical subject as well as academic qualifications in a demanding and stimulating curriculum. The aim is for students to leave the UTC with the best possible chance of success in work or higher education.

One partner in the UTC is Techmeetups.com that organises The London Silicon Roundabout Meetup group of over 1000+ tech companies from the area.  As part of the partnership Techmeetups will advise Hackney Community College and Hackney UTC on the current skills shortages to help fine tune the training programs for the market.

Techmeetups.com is also planning to run training sessions to help students understand the importance of networking, current technology trends and how start-ups work. As part of the partnership HCC will host Techmeetups events at its award-winning campus, and also work on creating a space to help start-ups and students collaborate and work together.

Apart from mentoring & helping various Tech Startups, Techmeetups.com also advices the Prime Ministers Office (PMO), Hackney Council and various non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) that work on the Tech City initiative, helping to make London’s Silicon Roundabout into the next Silicon Valley.

Hackney UTC is open for applications from 14 year olds to start in September 2012. Benefitting from such expert knowledge, resources and opportunities from Techmeetups, and the network that has turned east London into one of the most forward-looking centres of technical innovation, will put these local young people in the frame for future employment success.

Greenpeace stormtroopers in Old Street Volkswagen protest

by Techmeetups

Stormtroopers converged on Old Street in London as part of a Greenpeace protest against Volkswagen’s apparent opposition of European environmental laws.

At 7am this morning, commuters were greeted by an army of Stormtroopers at the exits of Old Street’s Silicon Roundabout as the Imperial March sounded. Protesting stormtroopers climbed the billboard above the roundabout to unfurl banners.

The Stromtroopers’ message was this: “All of us in the Rebellion are calling on Volkswagen to turn away from the Dark Side and give our planet a chance.”

Here's the flyer the Greenpeace stormtroopers were handing out at Old Street this morning.

This, the Greenpeace stormtroopers suggest, can be done by supporting strong CO2 emissions cuts and fuel efficiency standards.

Greenpeace is also calling on Volkswagen to harness its technology for greener use.

Government in £100k Tech City PR agency spend

by Techmeetups

The government is paying a marketing agency close to £100,000 per year to promote David Cameron’s Tech City overseas, a Whitehall department has confirmed.

In the same week that saw ministers applaud major reductions in government advertising and the axing of around a quarter of in-house government communications jobs, business minister Mark Prisk told MPs that PR firm Hill and Knowlton would be paid £99,945 to promote Tech City overseas for 12 months.

Speaking to Publicservice.co.uk, UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) said no concerns had been raised in government about spending the sum on the marketing campaign, which they believed to represent “excellent value for money”.

Silicon Junction: a new collaborative space for creative industries

by Techmeetups

Creative industries in south west London are pulling together and using their proximity to a total benefit that is greater than the sum of their parts

Robe Dale - I had a really interesting meeting last week with people from the creative industries around the Clapham Junction and Battersea area.

The focus was on an idea framed around the website siliconjunction.co.uk (so called in reference to tech hubs Silicon Valley in California and Silicon Roundabout in Old Street, East London). At its core, the webspace is intended to become a network where local creative businesses can join forces in order to pitch for high-end contracts usually too large to approach individually.

Here’s a short video from some of the guys – with a longer version here. (If you can’t see the video then here’s the link to Youtube)

In a recent piece in the FT, Tim Bradshaw wrote of how tech companies around Silicon Roundabout are pulling together and using their proximity to a total benefit that is greater than the sum of their parts – clustering alone, he said, without collaboration, seems a wasted opportunity (you can watch a video from the FT on this here).

The same principal applies around the Junction. For example, a small company with specific web-based skills can collaborate with another which specialises in video production to meet the requirements demanded by clients.

Sex, Coffee And Rock n Roll At Shoreditch Grind

by Techmeetups

 Original post by Cherie City

To get a great coffee in Shoreditch, the usual haunts are in and around Redchurch Street.  You can always rely on Leila’s Shop, Allpress and Present for a proper coffee, but venture past Hoxton Square towards Old Street and the options dwindle down to Starbucks.

Now, the big roundabout at Old Street just got a bit more interesting with the arrival of Shoreditch Grind, bringing sex, coffee and rock n roll to an otherwise drab part of the East.

I first spotted Shoreditch Grind on the bus back from Beirut and pretty much waited all week to get a nose in.  Today, Steven and I popped down for coffee and cake.

The cafe is small yet airy and bright and can fit a decent amount of customers.  I loved the exposed brick design, the communal table with old wooden school chairs and the bar seating overlooking the street – very east London!

London is in the middle of an Antipodean coffee renaissance and as you might have guessed, Shoreditch Grind continues the trends, with its roots in Melbourne coffee culture.  They even roast their own Shoreditch Grind house blend – now that’s dedication to the bean!

Prince William and Kate Middleton visit California to support Tech City

by Techmeetups

Prince William and Kate Middleton prepare for their trip to Canada and California (Pic: PA)

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s short visit to California is filled with a varied programme of events.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will land in the sunshine state on July 8, a few hours after saying goodbye to Canada, and be met by Sir Nigel Sheinwald, Britain’s ambassador to America.

The first engagement of their three-day trip will be a UK Trade and Investment reception featuring technology experts from both sides of the Atlantic who will be meeting to find new ways of creating jobs in America and Britain.

A key aim of the event is to generate support for Tech City, the area around Old Street in east London which is fast becoming a major base for innovative internet firms and software companies.

Silicon Roundabout – Shoreditch’s digital revolution – June 23, 2011

Lauren Bishop – I was surprised to see Silicon Roundabout referenced and pictured in the Sun last week. Quite a theoretical and London-centric piece for the Sun to pick up, I thought, despite being bylined to the rather famous (Sun-reading, apparently) founder of Tweetdeck.

Cheers to London’s Tech Scene – June 20, 2011

I just heard two old English ladies talking about tweeting in a Shoreditch coffee shop. Earlier this morning, I ran into a venture capitalist from New York City on the street corner of Chance and Boundary. And last night, I witnessed an Android app developer hitting on a posh British chick. I believe the apt term is “punching above his weight.”

Living near the headquarters of Google and Facebook is great for real estate prices and London could well be in for the same “Silicon Valley effect” on its house prices.
